Achille's Choice $4.79
by Larry Niven with Steven Barnes.
This excellent book takes us into a future where bio-engineered athletes face a choice of glory or longevity. Fascinating characters, including one that might be Bill Gates. Like most work Niven is involved with, it was hard to put down.
Alien Sex $4.79
19 Tales by the Masters of Science Fiction and Dark Fantasy (Roc Science Fiction) Edited by Ellen Datlow. Includes a piece by Harlan Ellison. "Slip into something a little more comfortable with this unusual and fascinating collection of 19 hormonally-charged tales involving sex and the alien -- married or otherwise." Not reviewed here.

Fallen Angels $4.79
Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Michael Flynn
An outstanding novel set in a future where science fiction has been outlawed, so fans are now outlaws. Their network rescues the crew of a space vehicle shot down by the eco-thugs running things on Earth whose extreme anti-industry laws have started a new ice age.

Footfall $5.59
Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's hilarious & serious novel of alien invasion by small elephants. Footfall refers to the dropping of asteroids on Earth to get our attention, & the manner both aliens and humans use to take surrender.
Footfall $9.60
Trade paperback. Excellent depictions of warfare; the high ground matters. To get there, humans build an Orion launch vehicle. Bellingham will never be the same. Footfall is one of the top 20 SF books of all time.
A Gift from Earth $4.79
Unique depiction of a caste society where the lower caste is preyed upon for organs for the upper caste. An impressive psi ability allows one man to thwart the designs of the upper class, speeding widespread access of a bioengineered gift from Earth. Re-readable.
The Gripping Hand $5.59
Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle's sequel to Mote in God's Eye takes us back to the Mote system, just as a new star creates a second path out. The Moties are loose, and the Empire of Man will never be the same. Worth re-reading a few dozen times.
The Integral Trees $4.79
Set in a cloud of gas surrounding a neutron star, it gives new perspective on the size and scope of a technological civilization. This one has lost much of its history, due to the machinations of "The State." Many excellent liberty themes.
The Legacy of Heorot $5.59
Niven, Pournelle & Barnes have written a gripping tale of humanity facing adverse environment. In this case, grendels are very powerful, blindingly fast, and amazingly vicious. Non-stop action and heroic characters.
Lucifer's Hammer $11.20
Trade paperback. Niven and Pournelle's classic depiction of a comet striking Earth. Sets the high water mark for this story concept. Outstanding characters point the way for survival under the worst conditions.
Lucifer's Hammer $4.76
Everything "Deep Impact" aspires to be and so much more than "Armageddon" it is to laugh. Gives a whole new meaning to putting the hammer down. These guys wrote the best surfing sequence ever.
The Man-Kzin Wars $5.59
I picked up Man-Kzin Wars because it had Larry Niven on the cover and a species from Ringworld in the title. It is a good read, as are most of the stories in the Known Space universe. This book is the progenitor of quite a series. But where is IV? <smile>
Man-Kzin Wars II $4.79
There are a great many stories in the Man-Kzin Wars series. The Known Space universe proved to be as popular among authors as it was among readers. I haven't read this one.
Man-Kzin Wars III $4.79
Man-Kzin Wars III came out in paperback shortly before a plane trip I took. As usual, the pickings in the airport newsstand were sparse, but here was Larry Niven's name. Having read the first in the series, I was concerned about starting in with the third, but found it a good read nonetheless. You really can't go wrong in Known Space.
Man-Kzin Wars V $4.79
There are a great many stories in the Man-Kzin Wars series. The Known Space universe proved to be as popular among authors as it was among readers. I haven't read this one.
Man-Kzin Wars VI $4.79
There are a great many stories in the Man-Kzin Wars series. The Known Space universe proved to be as popular among authors as it was among readers. I haven't read this one.
Man-Kzin Wars VII $4.79
There are a great many stories in the Man-Kzin Wars series. The Known Space universe proved to be as popular among authors as it was among readers. I haven't read this one.
The Mote in God's Eye $5.59
Here's Niven & Pournelle's masterpiece of science fiction. The Empire of Man voyages beyond the Coal Sack. There we find a star system cut off from the galaxy by the vicissitudes of Alderson point formation. Within this system is Mote Prime, homeworld to as strange a set of intelligent races as you'll ever meet. "This one goes to 11."
Oath of Fealty $4.79
"Think of it as evolution in action," say Niven & Pournelle in this excellent book about the evolution of the city. A single building a mile on a side fills a burnt-out part of Los Angeles. Access is controlled; inside are shops, homes, & factories, carefully protected from the city, state, & nation without. Computer-generated telepathy & other fascinating ideas for our near future.
Protector $4.79
An epic vision spanning the galaxy. Humans mature from children. What if something matured from adults? With the right food, adults become protectors, and thereby hangs a tale.
Ringworld $4.79 paperback, $8.80 trade paperback
Take a trip with Louis Wu aboard a Puppeteer spaceship with a Kzinti companion to an amazing artifact of an interstellar civilization: Ringworld. A staggering story about an amazing concept.
Ringworld Engineers $5.59
Expand your perspective by standing on a space habitat which is 90 million miles in diameter, a ring of transmuted matter a million miles across. What limits to growth? Problem: It is dynamically unstable. Return with Louis Wu in search of the builders, the engineers, to keep Ringworld from grazing its Sun.
Ringworld Throne $5.59 paper $16.10 hard
Once more onto the Ringworld. Even after three novels it is hard to encompass the scale of this place. It is vast in a way no other science fiction setting has ever been. Large enough to hold more thrilling adventures for Louis Wu.
The Smoke Ring $4.79 paper $49.96 audio
Return to the vast cloud of gas of The Integral Trees for more adventures. In some ways, the scale of the Smoke Ring makes Ringworld tiny in comparison. People in the Smoke Ring live in widely separated communities, so there is a more human scale.
A World Out of Time $4.79
How does the world end? A ram ship pilot returns to Earth millions of years in the future. Humanity is triumphant, has discovered several secrets to longevity, and has settled throughout the galaxy. Strange adventures await our returning astronaut.

What else can I say about Larry's books? There are some more listed below, and as time permits I'll return to this page to write longer reviews in the space below. I'll also review any new books by Larry Niven which come out, as well as the ones listed below which aren't shown above. Some of these are out of stock or out of print, and you'll want to order them through Amazon to encourage the publishers to come up with another print run. Also, Amazon will find out of print items with used bookstores and dealers for you.

You'll notice that all of Larry's books which I've reviewed above are beyond the third planet. In other words, they are worth buying and reading. Most of his books are very well written, and all of them include truly impressive ideas about the scale and potential of humanity's future. Even the collections of short stories, which are not generally to my taste, tend to be delightful either because of a particular character or a particular setting or concept.

Can Larry Niven do wrong? Well, like Homer, sometimes he nods. In any prolific career, there are some literary shortcomings. In Larry's case these are rare. One does not, after all, get to be a prolific author in today's publishing environment without having consistently good material that sells. Larry has sold a huge number of books, and it is a testament to his skill as an author that so very many books he is associated with are still being published.

Find Your Destiny

This latest offering from Niven develops some of the themes of World Out of Time and Gift from Earth. Once again, Niven has created a "hydraulic empire" based on the scarcity of some resource, in this case potassium. He also uses the medical technologies referred to in A Gift from Earth and further develops the theme of a caste society developing from crew and colonists after a long intertellar voyage.

Potassium deficiency has adverse effects on the development and maintenance of nerve tissue in animals. Its absence is also a difficulty for most plants, though this aspect of the situation is not discussed in Niven's book.

The novel as a whole operates as a bildungsroman, a coming of age story. Jemmy Bloocher comes of age on the planet Destiny. When he defends one of his townspeople, the accidental discharge of a firearm causes the death of one of the people from a merchant caravan. Merchant caravans follow Destiny's road to bring potassium in the form of "speckles" to the various communities on the planet. Jemmy flees from the scene of the crime, and resolves to follow Destiny's road to the resting place of the landing ship Cavorite.

The name Cavorite seems to be a paean to that perverse socialist, H.G. Wells whose book The First Men in the Moon uses a none-such material called Cavorite, invented by Professor Cavor, which has gravity repelling properties. Cavorite as a material neatly circumvents the laws of physics in a fashion to which Niven rarely resorts.

In Destiny's Road, the ship Cavorite leaves the newly settled colonists at the first landing site to explore the peninsula on which they have been placed. The crew of Cavorite use their fusion drive to destroy the indigenous life on the peninsula as best they can. They also use it to melt the crust along a wide "road" from which the book derives its title.

Niven depicts the indigenous life returning to encroach on settled areas and crops. The ongoing battle for ecological dominance is a motif throughout the novel, and plays interesting roles in various aspects of the life of the settlers. As with Legacy of Heorot the problems of colonizing a world with indigenous life are dealt with in considerable detail. These aspects of the story are very well developed and represent some of the most entertaining portions of the book.

There is raw adventure in the story, with fight scenes between humans and among humans and indigenous life forms. There is political and social commentary in various degrees. Most of all, there is the usual detailed speculation on the future based on reasonable assumptions about technological developments.

While I personally prefer some of Niven's other novels, notably those written with Jerry Pournelle, I found the book to be thoroughly enjoyable. It is a novel of considerable power and intricacy, worth re-reading several times.

Niven's political philosophy is disturbing. On the one hand, he develops a large number of libertarian themes. I consider his books to be one of the better sources of liberty-oriented, pro-individual philosophy in the entire science fiction milieu. However, it is also clear that Niven has an over-arching pessisism about the future of humanity.

He has written in The Smoke Ring, The Integral Trees and World Out of Time about the future of humanity, to include a single planetary "state" and eventually a single Solar System-wide "state." In both cases, these states are based on hydraulic empire concepts, controlling scarce resources, and lasting for tens of thousands to millions of years due to the absence of external forces to bring them down.

It is curious that he sees the development of such planetary governments in light of the very significant growth during the 20th Century of the number of nation states. From something fewer than 100 at the end of the 19th Century, there are now well over 300. Far from showing signs of success, the "world government" in the form of the United Nations has shown itself inept at gathering its tax contributions from member states, and unable to carry out unified command operations against such minor powers as Somalia.

My preference has always been to avoid spoiling the ending of any book in my reviews. Suffice it to say that Destiny's Road presents a satisfying tale with some very significant triumphs of the individual over the committee. When the sources and uses and "dumps" of potassium are considered, the solution the protagonist creates to eliminate a state-sponsored monopoly (really the only kind of monopoly) on potassium is both clever and amusing.

It has always been a delightful aspect of Niven's writing that most of his protagonists (with the notable exception of A Gift from Earth) succeed against impressive odds without any extraordinary powers of their own. Niven may see a dark future of state control and limitations on human behavior imposed by the powerful, but he also sees the individual as triumphant.

If you are sick and tired of government interference, taxes, and abuse, Destiny's Road is good for what ails you.

Timeless

In 1976, Larry Niven wasn't the bestselling author he is today. Over 22 years ago, he began an ambitious work, A World Out of Time which stands as one of the most far-reaching visions of the future.

Niven begins with the mere concept of cryonic preservation of humans after death. He follows the plight of one such "corpsicle" through the process of revivification. Like many commentators of that era, Niven in 1976 saw the ice crystal formation in the brain and nervous tissue as an insurmountable problem. While today's speculators invoke a plethora of fantastic nanotechnological wonders to cure this ill, even in that early day with cryonic suspension of humans only a few years old, Niven had an answer.

The solution he offers involves a brain-wiped criminal whose mind is replaced by the distilled memory RNA of the protagonist, Jerome Branch Corbell. To get the memory RNA out of Corbell's body, the State which revives him 200 years in the future destroys his body. Jaybee Corbell as he is known, awakens in a new body. He is quickly told that he has only one chance: prove himself to be useful to the State, or they will brainwipe the body and try another corpsicle's memory RNA.

For the body, not a major problem. For Corbell, a one-way ticket to oblivion.

Corbell cooperates, and learns a new trade "Rammer." Ramships are interstellar spacecraft based on the Bussard ramjet concept. A ship with very powerful magnetic fields deploys these to capture interstellar hydrogen. This material is channeled using the magnetic fields into a fusion engine. In later novels, Niven would largely abandon the use of these ships for human space travel, as the very powerful magnetic fields would require, at a minimum, a very long tether for towing the human occupants. However, such considerations aren't included in A World Out of Time, and the difficulty is a mild one. The Bussard ramjet allows for constant acceleration of a spaceship without carrying enormous reserves of fuel. A few moments with the calculus reveals that, accelerating at one gravity, a spaceship can reach an appreciable percentage of the speed of light within a few years.

Corbell is trained by Pierce, the checker. Pierce is a model apparatchik, the sort of soulless bureau-rat that everyone loves to hate. After a series of harrowing tests, Corbell is sent out into space to be launched aboard his ramship from the Moon.

Corbell's mission for the State is to visit a series of nearby star systems and seed the Earth-like worlds to be found there with bio probe packages. The bio probes will release algae and other Earth life into the reducing atmospheres of several worlds, changing them into Earth-like atmospheres over eons of time. Barely 180 years old, the State is already ambitious. It expects to rule the world for millions of years.

Corbell has other plans. Instead of following the mission course, he sets off toward Sagittarius, the direction of the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

Seeing that he isn't following orders, Pierce the checker, or "Peerssa for the State" takes over his onboard computer. Using a computer-generated model of Peerssa's personality, the computer attempts to persuade Corbell to resume his mission. Corbell "for Himself" learns that the computer can't simply disobey his orders, a fail safe feature which he quickly exploits.

The mission to the center of the galaxy is a success, leading Corbell past a massive black hole and back toward Earth at even greater relativistic velocities. The majority of the book deals with the tremendously changed Solar System to which Corbell returns.

One of the most interesting ideas in World Out of Time is the planet moving strategy which Niven introduces by misquoting a bad joke. "How do you get down off an elephant?"

You don't get down off an elephant. You get down off a duck.

To move the Earth, you need a lever long enough and a place to stand, said Archimedes. Niven reflects on how much damage you might do by applying the lever directly to Earth. He offers a better solution.

Peerssa for the State represents an hydraulic empire, the sort of resource-controlling empire which Niven deals with again in some of his other novels. He seems fascinated with a civilization with the control over individual life of the Egyptian Dynasties and the absence of outside "barbarians" to topple it. He suggests that a world-spanning empire would simply go on forever, becoming more decadent, and possibly creating its own barbarians for lack of anything better to do.

The political philosophy is interesting, especially given the power of his protagonist. Corbell is a Renaissance Man in that he is willing to learn anything, willing to do anything, curious about everything, and ready to accept life as it is without regrets about the life he left behind hundreds of years earlier (and eventually, thanks to relativistic velocities, millions of years earlier). His resilience is amazing, as is his stamina as a very old man being chased through a postmodern city by a very old crone.

Corbell discovers the secret of one useful type of longevity, an implication of Niven's matter transportation booths which Niven has explored in a number of his short stories. If you can adequately identify all the molecules and subatomic particles of a human being for the purpose of transport, as some recent newsstories suggest may be possible at least for photons today, then you ought to be able to transport all the accumulated poisons of the aging process and leave behind a healthier individual.

Niven explores the prospect of individual immortality, the sort of societies which might arise based on several different approaches to such immortality, and the scale of individual achievement and ambition in the future where such longevity is possible. The book staggers the ordinary imagination, spans time and space, and explores the possibilities of humanity.

If you share any of Niven's views about the perfectibility of mankind, about the power of the individual even against incredible odds, you'll enjoy this book.
