This unique painting by Doug McLeod, depicts Lunar Prospector in orbit, complete with the mission patch selected from the design contest organized by Milwaukee Lunar Reclamation Society. This painting was used on the 1989 Lunar Polar Probe conference poster. Prints of the painting, signed and numbered by the artist, are available from the Houston Space Society. The original artwork was auctioned off at the conference. The remaining prints of this painting are available for $89 each.
The painting depicts a lunar orbiting spacecraft with a gamma ray spectrometer in the foreground. The beautiful moonscape in the background is consistent with photos taken from lunar orbit by Apollo astronauts. The Lunar Polar Probe conference brought together scientists, engineers, and space enthusiasts to support the development of a Lunar Prospector Mission. In January 1998, the Lunar Prospector was finally launched to lunar orbit where it discovered definitive proof of extensive water ice deposits at both lunar poles.
The prints are high quality reproductions, of a limited edition of 100. Each print is about 18 inches wide by about 24 inches tall. Suitable for framing.
Price: $89. Shipped flat. Shipping is $11 for US; $20 for overseas. Giftwrap is $10.
Shown at right is a Lunar Prospector Team lapel pin. This smart looking pin is only $10. Shipping is $3 for US, $5 for overseas. Only a few left. Giftwrap is $1.
We had these fine embroidered patches made for the Lunar Prospector Team. Only a five in stock. The mission patch is shown at left just about life size. The design was inspired by a mission patch design contest held by the Milwaukee Lunar Reclamation Society and selected at the Lunar Polar Probe Conference in 1989.
As far as we know, no mission patch was adopted for the NASA Lunar Prospector mission.
The discovery of very extensive deposits of water ice at the Moon's poles may help clear up another minor mystery of the Solar System. The planet Mercury shows some very unusual reflections from its polar regions. Since it is inclined only a negligible amount, its polar craters never see the light of day. The same mechanism for depositing cometary water ice and other volatiles at the poles of the Moon should have operated on Mercury.
These patches are $12. Shipping is $3 US, $5 overseas. Giftwrap is $1.
The very attractive poster shown at right was used to promote the Lunar Polar Probe Conference in 1989. This conference really got things going for the Lunar Prospector mission, although NASA funding would require several years of effort by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Alan Binder.
The poster is a combined effort by Doug McLeod who painted the main artwork, and DesignAtWork who did the intriguing layout shown here. John Lowery and Mike Stovall were the main artists responsible for the DesignAtWork effort. We were very impressed, and so was Doug, who signed a small number of these posters.
The scan at right shows a purple diffraction anomaly which is not characteristic of the actual poster. In real life, the poster is black and white.
We offer the signed copies of this poster for $25 and the unsigned copies for $15. Shipped flat. Shipping is $5 US and $9 overseas. Gift wrapping is $5.
